Topkapi Palace

Basilica Cistern
The cistern, built in ancient times to meet the water needs of the city, is only among the historical monuments and presents itself to the view of visitors, even if there is water today. One of Istanbul's magnificent historical structures is the Basilica Cistern, located southwest of Hagia Sophia. This large underground cistern, built by the Byzantine emperor Justinian I (527-565), was called by the people "Palazzo della Basilica" because of the marble columns that rose from the water and seemed to be innumerable.
